Naval Base Kitsap Real Estate
Naval Base Kitsap is a U.S. Navy base located on the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington state. It was created in 2004 by merging the former Naval Station Bremerton with Naval Submarine Base Bangor. The Mission of Naval Base Kitsap is to serve as the home base for the Navy’s fleet throughout the West Puget Sound. Also to provide base operating services, including support for both Fleet Ballistic Missile and other nuclear submarines and surface ships having their home ports at Bangor and Bremerton.
Naval Base Kitsap is the largest naval organization in Navy Region Northwest and also provides service, programs, and facilities to meet the needs of their hosted combat commands, tenant activities, ships’ crews, and civilian employees. It is composed of installations at Bremerton, Bangor, and Keyport, Washington. It features 4 nuclear shipyards, the only dry dock capable of handling a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the Navy’s largest fuel dock, and a nuclear-weapons facility.
Bangor’s naval history began as a base in 1942 when it became a site for shipping ammunition to the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. For an expansion and to establish a permanent naval base, the U.S. Navy purchased 7,676 acres of land on the Hood Canal for approximately $18.7 million. The Navy announced the selection of the Bangor base as the home port for the first squadron of Ohio-class Trident Fleet Ballistic Missile submarines in 1973. The Trident Submarine based was officially opened on February 1, 1977. It is the sole Trident base on the Pacific Ocean. Naval Base Kitsap includes the Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific which provides maintenance, spare parts, and spare nuclear warhead storage the Trident ballistic missiles that are carried by the nuclear submarines.
Bangor, Bremerton, and Keyport bases are surrounded by the communities and cities of Bremerton, Silverdale, Poulsbo, Keyport, Brownsville, and Seabeck. The outlying areas around the bases are Kingston, Hansville, Port Ludlow, Bainbridge Island, Port Orchard and Gig Harbor. These outlying areas are all within a 30 minute drive of at least one of the bases and not more than 50 minutes of all of them. All of the named areas above are where a vast majority of the military personnel and people supporting the base operations reside and live. Each area is mainly rural except for the heart of Bremerton which even though it is a city the majority of the shopping areas are located in Silverdale.
